With three opponents, that's a potential three cards and three counters before it's even your turn again
Of course, other combo decks could still beat Splinter Twin, but consistency and interaction coupled with the knockout punch of the Splinter Twin combo made it dangerous to play any deck that had a bad Splinter Twin matchup
Sure, it will cost you at least six mana with this card, making it less impressive, but the chance of repeated activations is at least interesting
