The brackets for hanging the shelves inside of the shelf are made of solid steel. Our shelves are sanded smooth but do not have polyurethane or stain unless requested. Our shelves are very strong when installed properly. The brackets we use are tested to hold 70 lbs when installed properly into studs. Shelves can be pre drilled to standard
